Area Overview

If you've never put William Shakespeare and Damien Hirst in the same sentence then you could try by describing Shoreditch, both of them lived here for a while. As an area, Shoreditch is diverse and has seen the best and worst of times. Whilst the financial heart of London has only ever been literally across the road, Shoreditch has seemed for many people to have remained 'over there'.

The area has always been, and will likely and hopefully always be, a bastion for artists and musicians, although today is popular with financiers and lawyers, and a whole host of assorted others. Much of the regions historic textile and furniture industries are long gone and much of the area was destroyed in the Blitz, with a lot of the rebuilding arguably poorly planned.

However, many of the original warehouses remained, the Shoreditch faithful held firm, and in the 1980s a small group of pioneering entrepreneurs identified the possibilities of the area and Stirling Ackroyd was born. Running out of a small office on Curtain Road, the then small team played an integral part in the regeneration of the area, and the Shoreditch you see today; a vibrant and eclectic mix of pretty much anything you might need, and still, of course, just on the edge of the financial district. 'On the edge ', is perhaps fitting for an area like Shoreditch.

The markets at Spitalfields, Petticote Lane and Columbia Road have always been a destination for Londoners local or not and often feel like a step back in time compared with the newly built contemporary apartments and office blocks. It's an area where massive regeneration sits neatly and smartly next to history.

Shoreditch today offers a diverse range of galleries, boutiques, small businesses, bars and restaurants and remains at the forefront of cutting edge art, culture, architecture and entertainment not just for London, but for the rest of the UK and beyond. The East London Line extension, currently under construction, will link the southern suburbs directly to Shoreditch and will only serve to enhance the areas services and busy social scene. What used to be 'over there' is now very much here.

Our Shoreditch office covers properties in EC2, EC3, E2, E3, E8, E9 and N1: Shoreditch, Old Street, Liverpool Street, Tower Hill, Whitechapel, Bethnal Green, De Beauvoir, Stepney, Islington, Dalston, Bow and Hackney
