Clerkenwell has a rich history that can be traced back to the Middle Ages, and its more recent past is clearly visible in the eclectic mix of old warehouses and period buildings that sit alongside the contemporary new-build apartments. This is high-end living space in a prime location that is attracting an influx of new residents and dynamic commercial enterprises.
Living in Clerkenwell
Clerkenwell is a vibrant area ideally located for those working in the City, meaning that property here is always highly sought after.
The location bordering Bloomsbury, Holborn, Islington and Kings Cross, is understandably a significant attraction for buyers. The proximity to the financial district and the Tech sector means that tenants and buyers here are a mix of creative professionals and City workers keen to rent or buy one of the stylish properties Clerkenwell is famous for. Like its neighbour Bloomsbury, Clerkenwell also has a reputation for good quality student accommodation, with many attractive apartment blocks. Popular postcodes and streets in particular include the area around St John Street and Brewhouse Yard, a Berkeley Homes scheme that is nearby.
Stirling Ackroyd is the leading estate agents in Clerkenwell, and cover property in EC1, N1, WC1, Islington, City Road, Barbican, Farringdon and Chancery Lane. If you are looking to move please contact our local office on St John Street.
Eating and Drinking In Clerkenwell
Middle Eastern - £££
This ever popular restaurant in Exmouth market (you will need to book!) is worth the effort, for delicious vibrant food popular amongst the Clerkenwell locals. We recommend the Charcoal Grilled Lamb, although prices aren’t cheap so it is best when trying to impress.
Vietnamese - £
After opening as one of London’s first Vietnamese street food restaurants in Clerkenwell, Pho has opened across London after soon becoming one of the most popular lunch venues in the area. Hot hearty pho soup and noodles, perfect for a winter meal.
6 St Chad’s Place
Café - £
A hidden gem in the back of Kings Cross, the very laidback and friendly St Chad’s is the perfect place to catch up with friends or arrange a casual meeting. The breakfasts here are worth a visit, but for meeting friends you will want to try one of their many platters especially the Tart Platter.
Smiths of Smithfield
Brasserie - ££
If you love meat or cocktails, or both, this is the restaurant for you. Four floors dedicated to café, bar and dining perfectly fitting for its location in the heart of the Smithfield meat market. We thoroughly recommend the burgers but it is the perfect place to meet up with friends regardless of what you’re eating - expect comfy sofas, brickwork and wooden beams.
The Zetter Town House
Cocktails - ££
A Georgian townhouse hotel located just across the cobbles of St John Square, the cocktail lounge at the Townhouse has small plates from The Zetter’s chef, combined with amazing cocktails that are perfectly complemented. Very cosy and quaint, but their cocktails err on the wild side, featuring ingredients such as seaweed infused whisky and port evaporation.
The Modern Pantry
Fusion - ££
These elegant dining rooms overlooking St John’s Square serve an amazing selection of Asian inspired fish and meat delicious, including Persian spiced lamp rump or Juniper crusted venison. The atmosphere excels itself at times such as Afternoon Tea which offer an amazing selection of light sandwiches and sweets.
The Craft Beer Co.
Bar - £
A fantastic selection of beers and ciders are located on Leather Lane in Clerkenwell, and like its fashionable Angel branch, the selection of beers are always far too numerous to try. Staff here are always friendly and willing to let you sample a few of their offerings, but some are very strong so be careful!
Steak - £££
A neighbourhood restaurant in Farringdon, this is a steak restaurant to compete with some of London’s best (unsurprisingly part of the Hawksmoor lineage). Sides are extra but the range is amazing, in particular the fries with bacon salt.
