Hackney Area Guide

Hackney is a diverse and multicultural area that is undergoing massive regeneration to become one of the most highly sought areas for buyers and tenants. It is London’s prime up and coming area, and the large stock of Georgian and Victorian terrace properties in Hackney are fuelling this process of gentrification. New apartments, period restorations and warehouse conversions in Hackney are increasingly coming onto the market, with many exciting developments such as Dalston Square finding many ready and willing applicants.

Living in Hackney

Hackney is proud of its status as inner London’s ‘greenest borough’ with 62 parks and open spaces covering 815 acres. It is also famed for its reputation as a fantastic biking borough, and many make the most of this to cycle to work given its proximity to nearby Shoreditch and the City.

Key to its regeneration with the introduction of the East London Line in 2010, and the impact of the London 2012 Olympics on Hackney is still being felt, placing it on the map for many potential buyers. The green spaces, independent boutiques and cafes, and generously sized flats also make Hackney a popular destination with families.

Broadway Market
Everything - ££
One of London’s coolest markets, it hosts some great artisan foods and small boutique stalls, without being nearly as busy as some of its more Central counterparts. Expect a whole variety of foodstuffs here, but on Sunday it is the perfect place to go shopping for a brunch with a difference.

Frizzante at Hackney City Farm
Café - £
Styled on Italy’s agriturismo culture, the one to try here is the amazing weekly brunch special (as long as you can stand the guilt after visiting the farm!) A perfectly family friendly place to eat and a unique and calm way to escape the stress of the city.

Cat and Mutton
British - ££
This has been a fixture in East London since the 1600s, and what was initially an ale house has become an incredibly popular Broadway Market venue. Food here is brought to you by Licky Chops and focuses on small plates made for sharing that change on a daily basis.

Pub on the Park
Gastropub - £
A Hackney institution, this pub that backs straight onto the park offers its patrons one of the largest pub gardens possible. Extremely packed in the summer, but the fantastic pub food on offer keeps those looking for a hearty meal in the winter satisfied.

Café – ££
Railroad Café cooks seasonal food so the menu always changes, but you can expect quaint international food here, always deliciously flavoured. The coffee here is fantastic, but if you’re feeling a bit more lively they have a fantastic selection of London ales.

Buen Ayre
Argentinian – £££
One for meat lovers, Buen Ayre serves traditionally cooked charcoal grilled steak, with the idea behind it being to make the most of Argentine beef as well as the culture of a local neighbourhood grill. Expect to leave incredibly full as these portions are generous.

Prince Arthur
Pub - £
A traditional pub serving some fantastic versions of classic British food. Fish and shellfish is fresh from Billingsgate Market, but it is the meat and burgers here that really stands out. A great place to spend a weekend afternoon.

E5 Bakehouse
Cafe - £
An artisan bakery and coffee shop, the E5 bakehouse is famous bringing sourdough baking to Hackney, with loaves baked daily and weekly lessons in their traditional artisan methods.

The Hemingway
British - ££
Located in Victoria Park, the pub is named after the seasoned drinker and writer Ernest Hemingway. Although the menu varies, you can normally expect quality British fare including fresh fish and hearty cuts of meat; arguably how pub food should be.

The Dove
Pub - £
A pub serving a whole host of beers including a great variety of Belgian lagers and real ales. The Sunday lunches here are always phenomenally popular, exceptionally good value and one of the tastiest and cosiest pubs in London.
