Scoff Spot: Granger & Co.

It's that time of month again when we venture out around the City and Fringes to sample the delights that the capital has to offer, and so, whilst Clerkenwell Design Week was in full swing this month we went to the legendary Granger & Co. for a generously sized lunch.

Located just off St James Square, situated on the illustrious Sekforde Street, laid-back Aussie chef and adopted Londoner Bill Granger, opened the Clerkenwell based eatery in 2014, the first being in Notting Hill in 2011. Granger has created an open plan space that offers a relaxing experience whilst the naturalistic colour scheme and gold features allows the food to pop in this canteen-style setting.

It's not unknown that Grangers love of Asian cooking has been a strong influence throughout his career and so the Clerkenwell Spring/Summer menu was filled to the brim with a tantalising selection of Asian infused Mediterranean dishes, think yellow fish curries, Korean fried chicken and jasmine tea smoked salmon with green tea noodle salad. We opted for a shared starter of crispy squid with chilli and pepperberry sauce - often a risky choice if you don’t know the restaurant too well, however this gamble paid off. Not a single piece was left on the plate and if you’re a coeliac, you can eat as much as you like because unlike most, Granger & Co use cornflour. The shrimp burger arrived on a bed of green leaves served in a soft brioche bun and seasoned with coriander. If you’re more surf than turf this is one to definitely try, particularly as this isn’t a dish that appears too often. However the clear winner of the day was the belly pork, the Korean bbq sauce created the most incredible smoky yet sweet flavours with a nutty aftertaste from the roasted peanuts. If you are heading to Granger & Co, this is a meal we’d insist you try (or at least get someone on the table to so you can have a bite).

Despite our eyes eagerly giving the sweets section a once over (dark chocolate pistachio fudge anyone?), our meal well and truly defeated us and short of literally rolling down the marble staircase, there was work to be done and more of Clerkenwell Design Week to see.

Open 8am-11pm Mon-Fri, 9am-11pm Sat, 10am-6pm Sun Granger & Co offer the perfect setting for breakfasts with friends, lunch meetings and is even a popular place for the after work crowd.
