Exmouth Market has always been one of our favourite spots in London. Lined with independent cafes, beautiful boutiques and exciting restaurants this charming street is one of London’s hidden gems. For this month’s Scoff Spot, we chose to discover a new way of dining at Italian butcher Macellaio RC.
Greeted by a giant tuna fish and meat hanging in the windows, upon first impression it’s clear this Italian restaurant is something out of the ordinary. Originating from a successful group of restaurants in Italy, founded by Roberto Costa in the urban areas of Genoa, Macellaio prides itself in showcasing the best Italian produce.
The menu is based around two meats; beef and tuna. An odd combination at first thought, however it turns out they complement each other perfectly. If in doubt, ask a member of the waiting team to guide you through the menu, they’re more than happy to help and explain anything you don’t understand; their knowledge of the food is second to none!
Designed to share among the table, small plates of Italian style tapas is the best way to start the meal. Made up of the finest cured meats and tuna combinations, two of our favourites were the Bruschetta with Lardo and the Bottarga and Stracciatella (Mozzarella with Tuna eggs).
The main course is also designed to share with a choice of huge pieces of both beef and tuna steak. Once ordered the chef will present your meat to the table before cooking whilst the waiter stabs steak knives into your authentic wooden table. It’s all very dramatic but it’s just part of the experience!
London has a vast array Italian and steak restaurants but there’s nothing as beautiful as Macellaio around. Could it be the next Hawksmoor? We certainly think so!
