What to do once you’ve moved in: a checklist

23 February 2026 / Uncategorized

Whether you’re renting a new property or have just bought a home, you’ll already have completed a fair amount of admin before moving. But once you’ve got the keys to your new place, there are more things to do and checks to make to ensure everything is set up correctly.

Here is our summary checklist of the key steps to take for a smooth transition:

  • Make sure all services and utilities are connected in your name and have the right opening meter reading where relevant. Ideally, you should have contacted these companies two to three weeks before moving to give them time to transfer existing accounts and/or set up new ones:

•    Gas and electricity suppliers
•    Water/waste supplier
•    Broadband provider
•    Landline provider
•    TV licensing
•    Council tax

Also make sure you are registered on the Electoral Roll, if desired.

  • Locate the emergency shut-off points:

•    Stopcock to turn off the water supply if there’s a leak or burst pipe
•    Fuse box to switch off the electricity
•    Main shut-off valve for the gas

  • Update/transfer any smart devices you have brought from your last home, or that have been left for you by the last resident, e.g.:

•    Doorbell / entry camera
•    Speakers / displays
•    Thermostats
•    Other Google Nest or Amazon devices

  • Update any insurance policies and take out new ones where needed. Bear in mind that, depending on the property type and location, your premiums may be quite different to those at your previous address:

•    Buildings / contents
•    Life / health
•    Car / other vehicle
•    Pet

  • Double-check you’ve changed your address on all personal documentation and accounts, such as:

•    Bank and credit card accounts
•    Pensions, investments, savings, etc.
•    HMRC for self-assessment, and Companies House for any registered business
•    Driving licence
•    Subscriptions (online and mail) and delivery services, e.g. Amazon Prime and grocery accounts
•    Store loyalty cards
•    Clubs and societies, such as the gym

  • Make sure your employer has your new contact details
  • Register with a new GP and dentist, if necessary
  • Check whether you need to apply for a parking permit
